Gingivitis Can Develope Into Chronic Periodontal Disease
February 25, 2009 – 8:04 pmGingivitis is something that should not be ignored. If your gums are bleeding it is time to see a dentist, and soon! Gingivitis can progress into serious chronic periodontal disease and that can mean the loss of your teeth, and even more, this condition may even be linked to heart disease and stroke.
Do you have a personal oral hygiene regime that works for you? If your gums are bleeding then you need to change what you are doing and develop oral hygiene habits that work. I waited too long by ignoring regular dental visits and my bleeding gums developed into chronic periodontal disease. I’ve lost most of my back molars and have difficulty chewing. I now have impeccable oral hygiene but I paid for my lackadaisical attitude in oral hygiene with loss of teeth. The other effect of having chronic periodontal disease is the constant battle with gum infection. Pockets form around the teeth and create a haven for bad bacteria.
Despite having went through the ordeal of periodontal surgery, I still struggle with fighting these low level infections and I have been successful buy developing an oral hygiene plan that works for me.
Here is my oral hygiene regime. I have dental visits and cleanings 3 to 4 times a year. Only the hygienist can clean under the gum line. This is not something you can do yourself. Don’t neglect your dental visits.
I have also given up conventional toothpaste and mouthwash. This may seem strange but there are chemicals in toothpaste that may damage your mouth and decrease saliva. You need saliva for fighting bacteria. Dry mouth is not a good thing. The bad ingredient in toothpaste is called Sodium lauryl Sulfate. Almost all toothpaste contains this chemical.
Mouthwash usually contains alcohol and this is not a good chemical for the delicate tissues in your mouth. There is even some evidence that alcohol is linked to mouth cancer.
I use baking soda to brush my teeth plus a very good product called OraMD. OraMD is an all natural product made from peppermint, spearmint and almond oils and is quite strong. It kills the germs that cause gingivitis and seeps deep into the nooks and crannies of your mouth and lingers there, killing more bacteria.
I also use diluted hydrogen peroxide for mouthwash.
