Gum Disease News: Dental Health Links to the Whole Body

October 16, 2008 – 9:07 pm

I found this important bit of news on the internet:

(Ridgewood, N.J.) Could it be that how we care for our teeth and gums may have implications for the development of chronic disease? “Yes, current research supports it, and our center is taking it very seriously,” says John R. Varoscak, D.D.S., periodontist and head of the nation’s first Oral Systemic Evaluation Center.

The Oral Systemic Evaluation Center is taking an interventional approach to the treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. “Until now, there has not been a dental center with a focused program to evaluate and treat periodontal disease, with the recognition that its presence has a significant effect on one’s overall health and well being,” says Dr. Varoscak. “Our goal is to prevent this condition from progressing, at the expense of good health, particularly for patients at a higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and women considering pregnancy.”

Gum disease my result in more than the loss of your teeth - which is bad enough - it may effect your general health. Many believe it can be a cause of heart disease and strokes.
